Carmel, IN – December 11, 2023 – Today’s episode of The Omnibus Show will feature Audrey Larkin, actress and Managing Director at The Carmel Apprentice Theatre (CAT) in Carmel, IN.

Larkin has been involved in theater in one way or another her whole life. As a child, she was mesmerized by Beauty and the Beast on stage, when visiting Chicago. Larkin is a graduate from Baldwin Wallace University’s Theater Program in Cleveland, Ohio where she specialized in dramaturgy, directing, and acting.

She's been involved in the CAT almost since it started, when she returned home from Ohio and was asked by CAT owner Will Wood to cover the part of Lucy in, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown. She has been there, since.

Reflecting on her return to Carmel and her position at the CAT, Larkin says, “Paths of your life kind of go this way all the time. Then you wind up back where you are supposed to be.”

In this episode, learn how she came to be interested in theater and how she strives, in her current role, to help young folks explore the various facets of theater to determine their interest and guide them to be successful.

“If you do NOT believe you can do it, I believe you CAN do it,” says Larkin. She then explains the background and general purpose of the CAT.

The CAT works with the idea of children’s theater. Generally, children pay a fee, then go on to be cast in a show or work on a specific project. The CAT is different in that it is funded by the City of Carmel, so it is a non-tuition program. Students sign up online, then come in and do activities such as playing improv games, reading scripts, and talking to the director. There is a comedy show in the spring and a musical in the fall.

Students decide the extent of what they want to do. Do they want a lot of lines or to be someone in the background? The idea is to work together so they don’t feel alone. For someone who has never been onstage before, it helps to build confidence in an evaluation situation. They also offer Master Classes focusing on areas that help relieve tension or work on dialect, among others.
